A longstanding European undertaking is successfully completed – EU member states will automatically recognize Romanian nurses responsible for general care diplomas obtained before EU accession

On February 12, 2024 was published, in the Official Journal of the European Union, the Directive (EU) 2024/505 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 February 2024 amending Directive 2005/36/EC as regards the recognition of professional qualifications of nurses responsible for general care trained in Romania on the basis of which the other EU member states will recognize the Romanian diplomas obtained before January 1, 2007 by nurses responsible for general care who subsequently followed the revaluation program.

Following the actions of the Romanian authorities supported by the European Commission, in particular the Ministry of Education through the National Center for the Recognition and Equivalence of Diplomas which is, according to the law, the National Coordinator for the Recognition of Professional Qualifications, the EU institutions amended the existing European legislation on the recognition of professional qualifications so that the nurses responsible for general care who followed the revaluation program from 2014 to 2020 can acquire, in any of the EU member states, the recognition of the diplomas and certificates they obtained in Romania before the date of accession.

The actions of the Romanian authorities began in 2012 at the time of the general review of Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, when it was requested to include in the Directive also diplomas of qualifications so that the nurses responsible for general care issued by educational institutions in Romania prior to the date of accession to the Union European. For the recognition of these qualifications, the holders followed a revaluation program that was developed together with the experts of the European Commission and the member states and, subsequently, based on the 2020 report of the European Commission on its results, it was decided to automatically recognize these diplomas.

From the moment of entry into force of Directive (EU) 2024/505, the member states must adopt, within one year, the national transposition rules to effectively implement its provisions.

The Directive (EU) 2024/505 crowns not only the efforts of the Romanian authorities undertaken at the European level with the support of the Permanent Representation of Romania to the European Union, but also attests, at the same time, the quality of training for general medical assistants in Romania, which ensures integration on the workforce market national and European work.
